Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab has been making records since 1958, and since 1977 its Original Master Recording pressings have been the reference by which other reissues are judged. MoFi Electronics is the hardware side of that operation — a company that makes records deciding to make the equipment they are played on, which is a more interesting starting position than most.
The turntables are designed by Allen Perkins, founder of Spiral Groove, and they carry his bearing work: the flagship MasterDeck uses an encapsulated Spiral Groove inverted bearing under a hybrid platter, an inch and three quarters of aluminium bonded to Delrin, weighing better than fourteen pounds to put resonance where it cannot do harm. Its ten-inch dual-pivot carbon fibre tonearm is wired internally with Cardas, and it ships on HRS isolation feet. The MasterDeck is assembled in limited batches at MoFi's factory in Ann Arbor, Michigan; the StudioDeck below it is also made in the United States.
The loudspeakers come from Andrew Jones, whose previous work runs through KEF, Infinity, Pioneer, TAD, and ELAC. The SourcePoint range is built on a concentric driver of his own design — the ten-inch unit took eighteen months — which puts the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange so the speaker behaves as a single source rather than a pair of them.
